So devastating! My sister-in-law is an accountant at Terrenea Resort. She called and said they have taken in 100 families. Kids having a ball; swimming, activities, great food, yet parents on the phone with insurance companies in tears. Enjoyed your blog! As soon as I started reading it, I wondered if you had remembered how we hosed our roof, and the Ashes!! Love ya!

Oh, I love you too, my friend! Yes, I remember the ashes, the skies, the weird grey clouds (smoke), and watching the flames in the hills above our homes. They were such scary days. It was heartbreaking to see the devastation of these fires.

Kudos to Terrenea Resort (the one in Rancho Palos Verdes?) for helping 100 families. I keep reading stories of individuals and businesses helping with this tragedy. Gives me hope!

I am sure the restricted window of our electronic screens fail to capture all that is happening on the ground. Terror for many.

Important call out for recognizing the devastation and loss for so many suffering through the fires, and trauma stacking. Definitely a real thing! I was imagining you as a young girl in those situations you described, frightening for sure. The only trauma weather related I had to live through as a young girl were tornadoes in the Midwest, very real. Fortunately, my home, family and hometown community were not directly impacted by one.

However, hearing tornado sirens to this day still takes me right back to those times growing up and having to shelter in place. So scary.

Let's all corral our collective energies and offer assistance as we can to our fellow citizens affected by these fires and the organizations supporting relief and recovery.

Yes, we need to do whatever we can to help, in California and elsewhere. Writing about my experiences with fires and evacuating as a child has brought back so many memories. Talking about the traumas—fires, floods, earthquakes, tornados (which I have never experienced but which sound horrifying)—helps. So does taking meaningful action to provide whatever support we can. My sister is helping with on-the-ground volunteering by sorting donations. I can only write about the issue, share stories of everyday heroes, and donate funds. Thank you for sharing your experience.
